Fixing Ice Dams on Your Roof

🧊 What Is an Ice Dam?

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms along the edge of your roof, usually near the gutters. It happens when snow on the roof melts, runs down toward the eaves, and refreezes before it can drain. Over time, this creates a barrier that traps more melting water behind it.

❄️ Remove Fresh Snow from Roof

  • Use a roof rake with an extended handle to gently pull snow off the first few feet of roof (while standing safely on the ground).
  • Focus on clearing the roof edge, where ice dams typically start.
  • Important: If the snow is out of reach, do not climb on the snowy or icy roof—leave that for the professionals!
  • Tip: Do this soon after each heavy snowfall to stay ahead of buildup.

đź’§ How to Break Up Existing Ice Dams

What to do if you already have an ice dam?

  • Don’t chip at the ice with a hammer or shovel—this can damage your roof.
  • Instead, try filling a nylon stocking with ice melt, then laying it across the ice dam to help melt a channel through it.
  • Make sure to use calcium chloride ice melt—not rock salt (which can damage roof shingles and metal).

🧰 If water is already leaking into your home, call a professional roofer or restoration company right away.

🧤 Prevent Future Ice Dams

Long-term fixes:

  • Improve attic insulation and ventilation to keep warm air from escaping through the roof and melting snow unevenly.
  • Seal gaps around light fixtures, vents, and attic hatches to prevent warm air leaks.

🏡 A well-insulated attic keeps your roof colder, which helps prevent ice dams from forming in the first place.
